Established in 1929, the 13 floor Cathay Building's architecture is of British Gothic style. It is a combination of the outstanding architecture style of the 1880s and the decoration style of the 1920s.

The solid and magnificent Grosvenor House, completed in 1934, is a testament to the 1930s design ethic, with a central spire of 18 storeys flanked by an east and west side 13 floors high.

The third building, Cathay Garden, re-opened after its renovations on the 8th of June 2005 with a totally new look. It is a five-floor executive hotel building with 208 executive rooms. The first things you see when you enter its spacious lobby are a floor-to-ceiling bookshelf and comfortable sofas - reflecting the "cozy" nature of this haven for business travelers. Also in the lobby are the hotel Front Desk, Business Center and Lobby Lounge, decorated in a style that mirrors that of the historic Cathay Building.

In addition to the hotel buildings, the complex also contains one of the most historic meeting spaces in China, Jin Jiang Grand Hall. Since its opening, it has received more than 400 heads of state and government from countries all over the world. The original Grand Hall was the place where Chairman Mao Zedong and his colleagues held meetings and was also where the historic Sino-America joint communiqué was signed by Chairman Mao and U.S. President Nixon.
